Obituary

Mattatall, James Philip – 23, of Dartmouth. With broken hearts we said our final farewell to our son James who passed away suddenly and tragically on Saturday, Dec. 17 at the QE2 Health Sciences Center. Born in Halifax, he was a son of David and Elaine (Ferguson) Mattatall.  James was a graduate of Prince Andrew High School and the NSCC Kentville Campus from the Construction and Industrial Electrical Program.  He played Dartmouth Minor Hockey from Atom to Midget and later gave back by coaching.  Most recently James enjoyed playing in the Metro Touch Football League. Kind, caring and compassionate beyond his years, James was always thinking of others. His smile was infectious, there was no escaping his charm. His love of life and family, and his solid sense of decency guided him daily through his personal life and in his work.  He loved his chosen career as an electrician and as a fourth year apprentice with Black and MacDonald, his co-workers became a further extension of his family. He was always ready to share good humored tales of adventure from his jobs on the road and the people he worked with. His final act of compassion was through organ donation.  Besides his parents he is survived by his brother Daniel (Jaycie McGarvey); girlfriend Morgan Thurston; grandparents Harold and Lorraine Mattatall and Skit and Helen Ferguson.  James is also survived by his aunts Karla Napier, Edinburgh, Scotland; Gail Mattatall, Halifax; Deborah Hall (Don), Westchester; Brenda Vaughan (Alex), Dartmouth; uncle Stephen Ferguson (Giselle), Sackville, N.B.; cousins Adrian, Derrick and Andrew Dobson; Juliana and Paul Napier; Michael and Parker Vaughan and Tyler Ferguson. Visitation will take place 2-8 pm Wednesday December 21, in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home 217 Portland Street.  A celebration of James’ life will be held 1 pm Thursday December 22, in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church 216 School Street. Rev Dr. P. A. Sandy McDonald officiating. Private family burial will take place in Mount Hermon Cemetery. No flowers by request.  Donations may be made in James memory to the NSCC Foundation for the James Mattatall Memorial Fund at P O Box 1153 Halifax NS B3V 2X1 by calling 1-866-745-7919 or in person at any local campus.
