Mittens & Memories

Update – November 20, 2012

The mitten sale at the market was a huge success.  Over $800 was raised in support of the memorial fund.  Bernadette ended up knitting 200 pairs of mittens and only a handful of them were left as of today.  In an effort to make it to the $1000 that Bernadette wanted to raise, she took the remaining mittens and created a mitten tree in her front yard.  Since she lives close to an elementary school she is selling off the last of the mittens on her mitten tree.  People are buying up the mittens on the way to school and are even donating more than the price of the mittens.

Thanks to everyone that have purchased mittens to help raise money for the memorial fund, it is certainly going to a great cause.

Before the mitten sale on the weekend, there was an article in the online paper Halifax NewsNet,  click here to read the article by Joanne Oostveen.

On Saturday, Nov 17, 2012 at the Dartmouth Farmer’s Market in Alderney Landing from 8am until noon, there will be a charitable project in memory of James.  All money raised will go to the James Mattatall Memorial Award at NSCC.

This story actually starts with a girl who went to school with James, her name is Lauren MacDormand.  Lauren and her parents, Bernadette and Ed, wanted to do something special to contribute to James’ memorial fund.  So in January of 2012, just weeks after James’ death, Bernadette started to knit mittens.  In the past 10 months she has knitted and decorated over 150 pairs.  Ed has also contributed with his graphic design expertise and created the Mittens & Memories logo picture as well as created a flyer to be handed out with each pair of purchased mittens.

The mittens range in sizes from infant to medium/large with prices from $6 to $10 dollars.  If you are interested in purchasing some mittens but cannot make the farmers market, just send an email to mittens@jamesmattatall.ca and we will make some arrangements for pick up or delivery.
